What is BlackBerry?

BlackBerry® is the leading wireless enterprise solution developed by RIM that keeps mobile. professionals connected to people and information while on the go. It is a proven platform that provides users around the world with secure, wireless access to a full suite of business applications, including email, corporate data, phone, SMS, web and organizer features.

BlackBerry incorporates the industry's best software, services and hardware, providing the most comprehensive end-to-end wireless solution for corporate environments. It has become the corporate standard for wireless connectivity by properly addressing the needs of both mobile professionals and IT departments.

BlackBerry is already used by thousands of organizations.  A study of BlackBerry users by one of the top 10 research firms in the world, proves that the value returned by BlackBerry in immediacy, productivity and direct cost savings can be nearly immediate.

How does BlackBerry work?

For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server™ software tightly integrates with Microsoft® Exchange, IBM® Lotus® Domino™ and Novell GroupWise® to enable secure, push-based, wireless access to email and calendar.

For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Service™ allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal email accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and many popular ISP email accounts) from a single device.

What are the advantages of BlackBerry?

BlackBerry gives users the functionality of a mobile phone with superior email and text messaging capabilities. It allows users to communicate quickly and efficiently.

BlackBerry devices offer a convenient organizer, complete with integrated address book and calendar. And with browser capabilities, users can easily access information on the web.

With BlackBerry “push” technology, when an email message is sent, it's automatically pushed to the BlackBerry device. No prompting. No downloading.

Is BlackBerry a PDA?

BlackBerry differs from Personal Digital Assitants (PDAs) in a number of ways.

BlackBerry is a complete solution that provides users with secure, wireless access to a full suite of business applications, including email, corporate data, phone, SMS, web and organizer features. This proven platform incorporates industry-leading software, services and hardware, providing a complete end-to-end solution.

The data entry methods for BlackBerry handhelds are different than that for most PDAs. BlackBerry handhelds use the familiar QWERTY keyboard and a "click and roll" trackwheel.

BlackBerry handhelds are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network so email can be automatically delivered to your handheld. No dialing-in. No initiating connections. No modem to attach. No effort required.

With BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Desktop Redirector, BlackBerry incorporates advanced Triple DES and/or AES encryption technology, to meet stringent corporate security guidelines for remote email access. Email messages remain encrypted at all points between the BlackBerry handheld and a corporate email account, providing measures for the integrity and security of the data.

With support for Java™ 2 Micro Edition (J2ME™), BlackBerry enables a wide range of software application development based on open standards.

What if users don’t want to be "too connected?"

BlackBerry allows users to answer email, access corporate data and communicate with others whenever they choose, allowing users to get critical information and filter the rest.

For email, filtering can be used to define what types of messages are received on the handheld so that users only receive those that are important to them.

BlackBerry handhelds feature a variety of notification settings, allowing users to define how they are notified about different types of communications (e.g. phone calls, email, data alerts), so users can be discreetly notified of only the most important information when they do not wish to be disturbed.

Is the data sent to my handheld secure?

With BlackBerry Enterprise Server BlackBerry provides end-to-end security using Triple DES and/or AES encryption. All incoming and outgoing data is encrypted, and existing firewalls in corporate environments are not compromised. If the data is intercepted while in transit between the enterprise and the handheld, it is unreadable. In the encryption model used by BlackBerry, only the handheld and the BlackBerry software know the encryption key.

Is there password protection on the BlackBerry handheld?

Yes. Setting a password can protect the contents of the BlackBerry handheld. Once set, users can easily lock the handheld to protect against unauthorized access. If the handheld is left accidentally unlocked, password protection automatically begins after a brief period of inactivity. Should an incorrect password be entered more than 10 times, the handheld’s memory will automatically be erased, leaving the handheld unusable. If the legitimate owner forgets the password, the handheld’s applications can be reloaded from the desktop. The password itself is stored on the handheld in a secure manner so if the contents of memory were somehow downloaded from the handheld, it would not be possible to determine the password.

What if I am out of wireless data coverage?

When you travel into areas with minimal or no wireless data coverage, messages you send will be held at the handheld and the network will store messages sent to you until you return to an adequate coverage area.

Is BlackBerry considered a pager?

BlackBerry is not a pager.  It is an end-to-end wireless solution that offers a unique combination of hardware, software and service to provide access to keep users connected to information and communications.

BlackBerry provides wireless access to a full suite of business applications, including email, corporate data, phone, SMS, web and organizer features, so one can manage all communications and information from one single, integrated wireless handheld.

What is the battery life like?

Due to the efficiency of BlackBerry applications, and wireless access to information not stored on the handheld, the handheld’s memory is more than adequate to satisfy the typical BlackBerry user.

Each BlackBerry handheld has enough memory for thousands of addresses, appointments and email messages, as well as some additional third party applications.

BlackBerry handhelds store applications and data in flash memory, so unlike other devices, applications and data will be safe even if the handheld experiences a power failure.
